BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Junior Luicelena Perez
was named Southeastern Conference Co-Player of the Week, which was announced by the league office on Monday. This is the second weekly award for Perez this season.
"Luice just keeps finding ways to win," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "Her willpower and perseverance are commendable. She has been incredibly reliable all season. It's so rewarding to see her game surge."
Perez played a pivotal role in helping the Crimson Tide secure the program's first SEC Championship as she provided the clinching victory in the 4-3 win at No. 8 Georgia, overcoming a 6-2, 4-2 deficit to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. She, paired with Emily Zabor, also went 2-0 in doubles, which assisted Alabama in winning both doubles points against the Bulldogs and No. 31 Tennessee. Perez finished the SEC season with an undefeated 8-0 record in singles and is in the midst of a 10-match winning streak.
"She demonstrated such mental toughness on Friday against Georgia," added Mainz. "She was down and out literally fighting off a 2-6, 2-4 deficit. She rebounded with a gutsy comeback that will go down in the record books forever."
