Women?s Tennis Hosts Houston for Alumni Weekend Match

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The University of Alabama women’s tennis team hosts the University of Houston Saturday at noon in a non-conference match-up.  Alumni from head coach Jenny Mainz’s past 10 seasons will be on hand at the match to participate in the program’s annual Alumni Weekend.
“We are looking forward to hosting the Houston Cougars on Saturday,” said Mainz.  “They are a solid, well coached team that has turned in some strong results.  Our objective heading into the weekend is to take another step forward and gain momentum leading into SEC competition next weekend.   We are working hard to build confidence and focus on doing the right things especially in pressure situations.”
Alabama, 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the SEC, heads into the weekend on a two-match winning streak as the Tide defeated Mississippi State and Ole Miss in two 4-3 battles last weekend.  The Crimson Tide is led by SEC Freshman of the Week Tiffany Welcher from No. 1 singles.  She has posted a 14-10 overall mark and is 2-2 in SEC action.
The Tide is 7-5 overall against the Cougars.  Houston comes into the match with a 9-6 overall record after defeating Sam Houston State on Wednesday.
This weekend Mainz will welcome her alma mater into town as well as a handful of Alabama alumni for alumni weekend.  Over 30 alumni from the past 10 years headed to the Capstone to relive great moments in history.  The alumni will attend a dinner in their honor tonight followed by festivities before and after the match tomorrow.
“It’s thrilling to have such a positive turnout this weekend for our Alabama Women’s Tennis alumni reunion,” said Mainz.  “There are so many memorable times to reminisce.  We have been privileged to have such outstanding individuals in our tennis program.  These former players, trainers, managers and coaches have left a lasting impression in our hearts.  Their legacy will forever be remembered at the Capstone.”
Tomorrow’s match is slated to be played at the UA Varsity Courts, however, in case of inclement weather, the match will be moved to the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility adjacent to Coleman Coliseum.  Live statistics for tomorrow’s match will be available through www.rolltide.com.
