Jan. 22, 2014

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore Maya Jansen has been named the first Southeastern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the 2014 season, which was announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Jansen, after sitting out the entire fall season due to injury, returned to the Crimson Tide lineup last weekend at the Wildcat Winter Classic, where she went undefeated in singles against opponents from No. 15 Northwestern, DePaul and Iowa to win the tournament championship. Additionally, she won two matches in doubles, one of which came against the 38th-ranked duo in the nation of DePaul's Ana Vladutu and Jasmin Kling.

She and the rest of the squad are back in action this weekend as Alabama hosts ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility. The Tide will take on William & Mary on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m., while Oklahoma and Ole Miss will face each other at 2 p.m. The winners of both matches will play in the championship match on Sunday at 2 p.m., competing for a spot in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
