The women's tennis team kicks off its 2009 spring season against some of the nation's top competition at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Northwestern University. The Crimson Tide will take on opponents from No. 1 Northwestern, No. 20 Florida State and No. 62 DePaul.
"We are looking forward to starting our season in Chicago this weekend," said head coach Jenny Mainz. "The team worked hard over the holidays to prepare for the 2009 campaign. The tournament will afford us the opportunity to get a preview of some top notch teams and compete against nationally ranked opponents."
Alabama finished its fall season with a grand total of 45 singles wins and 23 doubles victories. Senior Shelley Godwin notched the most singles wins for the Tide with 11. Alabama's top doubles victors were junior Paulina Bigos and sophomore Tiffany Welcher who teamed up for nine wins. In addition, Welcher earned the No. 72 spot on the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division I Women's Singles Rankings.
The Tide opens up play with singles against Florida State on Friday at 10:00 a.m. (CST) followed by doubles against Northwestern at 2:00 p.m. (CST). Alabama will then take on DePaul in doubles around 3:15 p.m. (CST). Matches resume Saturday at 9:00 a.m. (CST) when the Tide takes on Florida State in doubles before facing off against Northwestern in singles at 10:30 a.m. (CST). Alabama will finish Saturday against DePaul in singles at 4:00 p.m. (CST). Competition begins Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (CST) and will feature a mix of all teams taking part in the tournament.

Next up, the Tide returns home for its first dual match of the season when it hosts UT Chattanooga on Saturday, January 25 at 1:00 p.m. (CST). All matches will be played at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.
