Women's Tennis Captures Eight Wins on Friday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women’s tennis team collected eight wins on Friday, including two at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., and another six at the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic in Sarasota, Fla. Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane won their second doubles match in as many days at the National Indoors, topping the nation’s 12th-ranked team in William & Mary’s Maria Belaya and Beltje Loomans, 8-3. The Crimson Tide tandem will now take on No. 1 Sabrina Santamaria and Kaitlyn Christian of USC in the semifinals. In singles, No. 36 Guarachi won her second match of the fall season against Mississippi’s Caroline Rohde-Moe, posting a 6-0, 7-5, victory in the consolation draw. At the Clay Court Classic, Maya Jansen and Antonia Foehse tallied the first victory of the day for the Tide, beating the Memphis team of Liza Tymchenko and Skylar Kuy Kendall, 8-6. From there, Alabama collected five additional wins in singles from Jansen, Foehse, Natalia Maynetto and Emily Zabor. Jansen won both of her singles matches on the day, beating Petra Ferancova of Mississippi State, 6-2, 6-1, and Tennessee’s Mimi Fotopolous, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Maynetto came from behind to win her match against East Tennessee State’s Ana Gerbasi, 1-6, 6-0, 6-0, while Zabor topped the Lady Volunteers’ Tiffany Tavares, 6-2, 6-0. Foehse would collect the final win in singles recording a 6-4, 6-2, victory over East Tennessee State’s Lyn Yee Choo. Matches resume on Saturday at both the National Indoors and the Clay Court Classic.
