Mary Anne Macfarlane and Alexa Guarachi had a successful first day of play at the 2012 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships as the pair moved onto the doubles quarterfinals, while Macfarlane also advanced to the singles round of 16.
The Crimson Tide duo earned a first-round bye and then defeated Virginia's Maci Epstein and Erin Vierra, 8-6, in the round of 16. Guarachi and Macfarlane will take on the tournament's No. 3 seed in William and Mary's Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans on Friday.
In singles, Macfarlane dominated Georgia's Maho Kowase, 6-0, 6-1, and will face USC's Sabrina Santamaria in the next round. Guarachi also represented Alabama in singles, dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Stanford's Krista Hardebeck, the No. 4 seed.
Match play resumes at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center on Friday morning.
