BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Junior Alexa Guarachi and sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane secured a spot in the prestigious ITA/USTA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships with a 9-8(3) victory over senior teammates Courtney McLane and Taylor Lindsey on Monday in the finals of the Southern Regional Championships.
"Credit to Alexa and Mary Anne," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "They played a very solid match and were very aggressive. It was a well-played match all around though. It is a good situation for us to be in, in that it is competitive within our team and it challenges our team to be at their best. Courtney and Taylor played a great match, and in the end, Alexa and Mary Anne really stepped up. They played the bigger points more aggressively. It was a battle from start to finish, and they showed a lot of maturity playing each other."
Macfarlane also competed in the singles finals and retired after dropping the first set, 6-2, to Mississippi's Kristi Boxx. Despite the loss, Macfarlane already secured a spot in the singles draw due to her finish at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships earlier this month.
"Throughout the regional we were sharp," added Mainz. "I think from Mary Anne in the main draw finals to Emily Zabor winning the main draw consolation finals, everyone was ready to play. Everyone competed hard and gained a lot. We have had a very promising fall and have showed a lot of forward progress."
Alabama will wrap up its fall season in two weeks with some members of the team traveling to Flushing, N.Y. for the ITA/USTA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and the remaining members at the Memphis Collegiate Invitational.
