TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
The women’s tennis team swept the finals at the 2012 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships on Monday, sending Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane to New York for the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. The tournament will be played Nov. 8-11, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.
In the morning doubles match, Guarachi and Macfarlane came out solid from the start and broke early to take a 3-0 lead over Auburn’s team of Jackie Kasler and Jen Pfeifler. The Tigers countered late, but the Crimson Tide was too much, eventually winning 8-4.
Guarachi’s singles match looked like it was going to be a quick one as she won the first set in 30 minutes by a score of 6-1. The following two sets, however, would take over two hours and were a battle from the get-go. Mississippi’s Caroline Rohde Moe broke for the 2-0 edge before Guarachi went on to win five straight games in the second set. Rohde Moe fought her way back and won the last five games to take a 7-5 victory in the second, forcing a third set. In the final frame, Guarachi broke for the 3-2 lead, however Rohde Moe would take the next three, setting herself up to serve for the match. Guarachi placed her shots perfectly and took advantage of rare miscues by Rohde Moe to win the next four games, taking the final set, 7-5.
