The women’s tennis team had another solid day of play at the 2012 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships, winning five of the seven matches it played in. With the wins, the Crimson Tide will continue on in the main draw of both singles and doubles.
In doubles, the tournament’s No. 1 seeded team in Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane cruised to a pair of wins, topping LSU’s Caroline Hudson and Ella Taylor, 8-1, before beating Troy’s Lyubove Dorafeeva and Karoline Grymel, 8-2.
Guarachi, the No. 1 seed in singles, topped Pleun Burgmans of Auburn, 6-4, 7-5, to move on to the quarterfinals of singles on Sunday. Natalia Maynetto will also represent the Tide in the main draw quarterfinals as she led sixth-seeded Alexandra Perper of Mississippi State, 6-1, 3-0, before Perper retired. Alabama’s third singles win of the day came from Emily Zabor, who battled through a third-set tiebreaker to beat Samford’s Lauren Caballero, 6-0, 3-6, 10-5.
Matches will resume on Sunday at 9 a.m. CT with the semifinals of doubles followed by two rounds of singles.
