Tide Earns Eight Wins on First day at Southern Regional Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The women's tennis team opened play at the 2012 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships on Friday at The University of Alabama Tennis Stadium where the Crimson Tide came away with 11 victories. Alabama picked up six wins in singles and two in doubles. In doubles, the tournament's No. 1 seed in Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane defeated Auburn's Plamena Kurteva and Michala Kucharova, 8-4, while Alabama's Emily Zabor and Maya Jansen shutout Mississippi's Allie Robbins and Paige Keating, 8-0. Singles proved to be just as successful for the Tide, as Alabama won six of the seven matches is played in. No. 1 seed Guarachi had a bye in the first round and breezed through her second round match, beating Kurteva, 6-1, 6-0. Eighth-seeded Jansen came back from a loss in her first set to beat Auburn's Ashley Kitchen, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 before beating Troy's Anja Cosovic, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16. Natalia Maynetto would also win both of her matches, taking down Auburn's Maria Cardenas-Conti, 6-0, 6-3 and Tulane's Caroline Thornton, seeded 9-16, 6-2, 6-2. Zabor came up short in her three-set match to fourth-seeded Jen Pfeifler of Auburn, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, but dominated her second match, beating Jackson State's Angie Condorelli, 6-0, 6-0. Matches will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT with the next two rounds of doubles followed by one round of singles.
