GREENVILLE, S.C. -
The women's tennis team earned two more wins on Sunday on the final day of play at the 2012 Furman Fall Classic. With the victories, the Crimson Tide tallied a combined 12 wins over the course of the three-day tournament.
"We gained a lot of helpful match play over the weekend," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "We're working through things and knocking off the rust. We are moving forward, but we still have a lot of work in front of us."
Emily Zabor battled her way through the longest and closest match of the event, beating South Carolina's Josefin Andersson, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(0), for Zabor's first singles victory of the tournament. Also picking up a win on Sunday was Natalia Maynetto, who beat Tennessee's Tiffany Tavares, 6-3, 6-3. Both Mary Anne Macfarlane, ranked 10th in singles, and Maya Jansen competed in their respective draw finals, but would fall to opponents from North Carolina as Macfarlane was topped by Gina Suarez-Malaguti, 6-2, 6-2, and Jansen, 7-5, 6-4, by No. 24 Lauren McHale. Yasmeen Ebada would also drop her final singles match by a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Furman's Alex Moreno.
Next up for the Tide are the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships and the Roberta Alison Fall Classic. The qualifying round of the All-American Championships begins on Tuesday, Oct. 2, while the Roberta Alison Fall Classic will take place in Tuscaloosa on Oct. 5-7.
