Women's Tennis Collects Five More Wins at Duke Fab Four Invite

CARY, N.C. - The Alabama women’s tennis team added five wins on Saturday at the Duke Fab Four Invite to bring its total over the two days to 12 victories. The Crimson Tide collected four of its wins in singles and another in doubles.
Action began at the Cary Tennis Park with the final round of doubles, where Emily Zabor and Natalia Maynetto picked up an 8-5 win against North Carolina’s Tessa Lyons and Zoe DeBruycker, while Mary Anne Macfarlane and Maya Jansen were edged out by a score of 8-6 to two of the nation’s top-ranked newcomers in the Tar Heels’ Ashley Dai and Whitney Kay.
In singles, each player won one of their two matches on the day. Maynetto fell 7-5, 6-3 to Purdue’s Mara Schmidt before topping North Carolina’s Laura Slater, 6-3, 6-3. Jansen won her first match, posting a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Miami’s Melissa Bolivar, but fell in her second appearance of the day to the Tar Heels’ Gina Suarez-Malaguti, 6-1, 6-1. Macfarlane, ranked 10th in singles, pulled out a three-setter against North Carolina’s Caroline Price, ranked 71st, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, before dropping a 7-6(7), 6-2 decision to the 35th-ranked player in the nation in Duke’s Hanna Mar. Zabor took on William & Mary’s Maria Belaya in the first match, falling 6-2, 7-6(2) and advanced in her second match by a walkover against Texas A&M’s Stefania Hristov.
The Duke Fab Four Invite will conclude on Sunday with the final round of singles. Matches are slated to begin at 8 a.m. CT.
