Women's Tennis Earns Four Wins on Friday at Duke Fab Four Invite

CARY, N.C. - The women’s tennis team collected four wins on the first day of play at the Duke Fab Four Invite, which is being held at the Cary Tennis Park. Two of the Crimson Tide’s wins came in singles while the other two came in doubles.

The tournament kicked off Friday morning with the first two rounds of doubles. Alabama’s Mary Anne Macfarlane and Maya Jansen got off to a solid start, posting an 8-6 win over the Mississippi duo of Julia Jones and Erin Stephens and followed that up with an 8-3 win against Duke’s Mary Clayton and Marianne Jodoin to advance to the finals of their draw. The Tide’s Emily Zabor and Natalia Maynetto had two hard-fought matches, coming up just short in both of them, falling 8-6 to the Rebels’ Caroline Rohde-Moe and Marija Milutinovic in the first round and Purdue’s Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany, 9-8(5) in the consolation round.

In singles, Jansen and Macfarlane won their opening round matches as Jansen topped Duke’s Ester Goldfield, 6-4, 6-3, while Macfarlane posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory against William & Mary’s Anik Cepeda. Maynetto and Zabor also represented the Tide in singles, facing the Blue Devils’ Clayton and Jodoin, respectively. Clayton would come away with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Zabor, while Jodoin collected a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Maynetto.

Matches will resume Saturday with the final round of doubles followed by the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of singles.
