ATHENS, Ga. -
Alexa Guarachi and Courtney McLane, ranked 14th in the nation, fell 6-3, 6-3 to the No. 13 team in Baylor’s Ema Burgic and Nina Secerbegovic on Friday in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Doubles Championship. With the loss, the Crimson Tide duo finishes the season at 18-5 overall.
“Courtney and Alexa have led the way in doubles for us for the last couple years,” said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. “For them to be here three consecutive seasons, which is not easy to do, is very impressive. Every time that you get in this situation, you respond better. The more times we are in the postseason, both as a team and individually, the better we will be. I think we will continue to build on this and have a lot to be proud of.”
Burgic and Secerbegovic broke in the first and last games of the opening set to take it 6-3. In the second, Baylor broke early for the 3-1 edge before Alabama got the match back on serve to even the count at 3-3. From there, Burgic and Secerbegovic won the final three games to take the match and advance in the tournament.
“Overall, this year has been a testament to the improvement and dedication, and for this team to qualify two singles players and two doubles teams is pretty outstanding,” added Mainz. “We have come so far in the last few years and even farther this season. It is indicative of the hard work and commitment the team has put forth. I think we are definitely moving forward, and I am really proud of the things we were able to accomplish as a team. I am optimistic that this will pay dividends in the future.”
