ATHENS, Ga. - Mary Anne Macfarlane advances to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship after winning her opening match on Tuesday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Macfarlane, who is making her second straight appearance in the field of 64, came up big in her third set against Long Beach State’s Anais Dallara, winning the match 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. She will now take on the winner of the match between Nebraska’s Mary Weatherholt and Cal’s Zsofi Susanyi on Thursday.
Teammate Alexa Guarachi was also in action on Wednesday in singles, taking on the No. 6 player in the nation in Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar, who would end up winning 6-4, 4-7, 7-6(3). The first set was on serve until Sanchez-Quintanar broke late. In the second, Sanchez-Quintanar would win the first game before Guarachi rattled off three straight for the 3-1 advantage. In the final set, Guarachi had four match point opportunities, leading 6-5, but Sanchez-Quintanar came back to take the game and send it into a tiebreaker. The Texas A&M netter jumped out to an early lead, which she’d use to take the set 7-6(3).
In addition to Macfarlane’s singles match, the Crimson Tide will field a pair of teams in the NCAA Doubles Championship, which begins tomorrow. Guarachi and Courtney McLane are slated to take on William and Mary’s Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans. Macfarlane and Antonia Foehse, who just found out today that they were selected as alternates, will face off against Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath of Rice.
