COLUMBIA, Mo. -
The women's tennis team was topped by Georgia, 4-0, in the championship match of the 2014 Southeastern Conference Tournament on Sunday at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. Both Luicelena Perez
and Emily Zabor
were named to the All-Tournament Team, marking the first time the Crimson Tide has had two individuals on the team in the same season.
The Bulldogs (21-4) edged Alabama (22-4) to get the doubles point with the deciding match coming down to the battle on court three. The Tide would first get a big win on court one as seventh-ranked Maya Jansen and Erin Routliffe dominated No. 2 Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase, 8-3. Georgia then evened the count as No. 27 Silvia Garcia and Kate Fuller beat 41st-ranked Mary Anne Daines and Danielle Spielmann, 8-5.
Right about that time, the Bulldogs' Carolina Brinson and Lilly Kimbell broke to take a 7-5 lead on court three, however Perez and Zabor would break back and hold on Zabor's serve to even the set at 7-7 to send it into a tiebreaker. Georgia would win six of the first eight points of the tiebreaker, but Alabama wouldn't go down easily and took the next three points bringing the score to 6-5 in favor of the Bulldogs. Georgia would take the match and the doubles point on the next serve winning the tiebreaker, 7-5.
In singles, Alabama got first-set wins from Zabor and Perez on courts five and six, both by 6-2 decisions, however Georgia would go on to win the first three points in singles before the Tide could get on the board. On court three, No. 18 Kowase posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over 73rd-ranked Routliffe to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead before No. 83 Kimbell edged out No. 85 Jansen, 7-5, 6-3. No. 17 Garcia then clinched the match for Georgia, winning 6-4, 6-3 on court two over 115th-ranked Spielmann. Match play was then suspended with Zabor leading 4-1 in her second set and Perez up 4-2 in her second set.
Alabama now awaits the NCAA Tournament selection, which will take place on Tuesday, April 29, at 4:30 p.m. CT.
