FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The women’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision Sunday to No. 22 Arkansas at the Dills Indoor Tennis Stadium. The loss puts the Crimson Tide at 8-10 on the season and 1-7 against Southeastern Conference opponents, while the Razorbacks improve to 14-7 overall and 4-4 versus league foes.
Arkansas took the early advantage in the match thanks to winning the doubles contests on courts two and three. First off was the matchup at No. 2 where sophomore Kate Lukomskaya and freshman Kelsey Sundaram shut out Alabama senior Alice Tunaru and freshman Antonia Foehse for the 8-0 win. The Tide evened the win count in doubles as it dominated on court one with its 20th-ranked pair of sophomore Courtney McLane and freshman Alexa Guarachi picking up an 8-2 decision over junior Anouk Tigu and sophomore Stephanie Roy. The doubles point came down to the matchup at No. 3 that looked to be going in favor of the Tide early on as senior Paulina Bigos and junior Meritt Emery led 3-1. The Razorback duo of freshmen Claudine Paulson and Valentina Starkova, however, came back to take the match 8-5 giving Arkansas the point.
In singles action, the Razorbacks grabbed the first four wins en route to clinching the match win. First to finish was the duel at No. 4 where Sundaram earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Foehse. Next to finish was the contest on court six as Starkova won 6-3, 6-4 over Tunaru putting Arkansas within one point of the win. Carbone would clinch the match at No. 3 as she beat Emery 6-3, 6-2.
The rest of the matches would be played out despite the overall dual match already having been decided. In the only battle of ranked opponents on the day, No. 65 Tigu took down No. 47 Guarachi 7-5, 6-3 on court one. Next to finish was McLane on court two, who posted a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over 115th-ranked Lukomskaya for her fifth straight win in singles. The matchup on court five was the only three-setter of the match which went in favor of Paulson 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 over Bigos.
