TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama head softball coach Patrick Murphy announced the signing of Marisa Runyon (Myrtle Beach, S.C.). Runyon will join the Crimson Tide from Carolina Forest High School.
“Marisa is a throw right, hit left middle infielder from Myrtle Beach,” Murphy said. “She has great power coming into our program and will get even stronger after spending time with our conditioning coach, Michelle Diltz.”
During her junior year, Runyon was named The Toast of the Coast Softball Player of the Year by The Sun News after leading Carolina Forest to the Class AAAA state championship while batting .556 with a .975 slugging percentage. The junior led the Panthers with 40 RBI and scored 30 runs, all while committing just three errors from her shortstop position.
Runyon also hit five home runs on the year, the same number of strikeouts she had during the season. She added 15 doubles and two triples as she was named to her second consecutive Class AAAA All-State team in 2012.
“One of the things we really liked about Marisa was she can play all four infield positions if needed,” Murphy said. “Her athleticism is tremendous.”
Runyon was the first of four standouts to sign to play for the defending national champions.
