TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama softball team opened up its 2012 fall season with a pair of victories over Northwestern State in Fall Brawl I on Saturday afternoon at Rhoads Stadium. The Crimson Tide knocked off the Lady Demons in game one, 10-4, behind five RBI from senior Kayla Braud. UA then followed up with a 5-0 win in game two.
Alabama opened the day with three runs in the second inning, started when freshman Leona Lefaele drew a walk, advanced on a fielder’s choice and moved to third on freshman Andrea Hawkins’ single. Lafaele scored on a throwing error and Hawkins was plated on Braud’s RBI double. Braud came around to put the Tide up, 3-0, on newcomer Molly Fichtner’s single.
After the Lady Demons tied it up in the top of the third, Kaila Hunt led off the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run to retake the lead. After Alabama was able to load the bases with one out, the Tide blew it open with a grand slam from Braud, increasing the lead to 8-3.
Alabama added a pair of runs in the fifth inning, as Chaunsey Bell and Ryan Iamurri hit back-to-back RBI singles.
Leslie Jury picked up the win for Alabama, throwing a complete game with two strikeouts.
Junior Jackie Traina pitched a complete game one-hitter and freshman Andrea Hawkins and Haylie McCleney drove in two runs apiece as Alabama cruised in the second game of the day.
Alabama jumped out with three runs in the second inning, all with two outs. Danae Hays doubled and advanced to third on a Keima Davis single. Both would come around to score on Mcleney’s two-run single. McCleney would come around to score on a Hawkins double, putting the Tide up, 3-0.
The Crimson Tide tacked on a run in the fifth and sixth innings for the final margin. In the fifth inning, McCleney reached on an error and came around to score on a single by Hawkins. Pinch runner Danielle Richard came around to score on a double by Hays in the sixth inning, putting UA up, 5-0.
Traina struck out 10 batters in a complete game effort for the win.
Alabama returns to action on Sunday, with a doubleheader against Anderson at Rhoads Stadium. Game one is scheduled for Noon.
