Softball Concludes Fall Play with Two More Wins
The Alabama softball team concluded its fall exhibition play with two more wins Sunday afternoon at the UA Softball Complex. The Crimson Tide opened play with a 15-0 victory over Chattanooga State and then defeated Wallace State 8-0 to finish its fall slate a perfect 6-0.
"Every lineup will be totally different." UA head coach Patrick Murphy
said. "I will have a new lead-off hitter, a new clean-up and a new nine-hole hitter in every game. Secondly we are looking for a shortstop/second base combination as well as pitcher/catcher combinations."
Alabama enters the new season after compiling a 45-15 record last year. The Tide returns 14 players, including All-Americans Kaila Hunt, Jackie Traina and Haylie McCleney.
"We have really good leadership from our five seniors." Murphy said. "There are a few girls that really stand out to me early including Haylie McCleney, Leona Lafaele, Jackie Traina and Leslie Jury."
Traina posted a 19-8 record with a 2.49 ERA and added 13 home runs and 45 RBI. McCleney, in her freshman season, led the team with 68 runs, 120 total bases and a .538 on base percentage.
Alabama also welcomes four new faces to the squad - Chandler Dare, Peyton Grantham, Sydney Littlejohn and Marissa Runyon.
The Northwest Florida State College Raiders finished last season with a 39-14 regular season record and went 10-6 in the Panhandle Conference.
Alabama will return to the field for Fall Brawl II when it hosts the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders, including former Alabama great Kelly Montavo, now an MTSU assistant, on Sunday, Oct. 20. The Tide and Blue Raiders will compete in a twin-bill with the first game set for 1 p.m.
