STARKVILLE, Miss. - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association has announced the 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region teams, honoring student-athletes from the 10 NFCA regions. Alabama had a total of four players named with three earning first-team honors the association announced.
Senior Charlotte Morgan (Moreno Valley, Calif.) earned first-team honors at the utility/pitcher position. The senior was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year for the second straight season, nabbing the honor for the first time in school history last season. She paced the conference in home runs (9), RBI (36), slugging percentage (.848) and finished second in the league in walks (30).
Morgan enters NCAA postseason play hitting .352 with a team-best 16 home runs and 67 RBI overall. The senior is slugging .782 and sports a .532 on base percentage. She has walked 52 times and drilled 11 doubles.
Junior Kelsi Dunne (Port Orange, Fla.) was also named to the first-team. Dunne earned the SEC Pitcher of the Year honor earlier this season for the first time in her career by leading the league in wins (13), strikeouts (144) and opponent batting average (.174). Dunne is the second player in Alabama history to win SEC Pitcher of the Year, joining former Tide great Stephanie VanBrakle, who won the honor in 2006. The junior struck out at least 10 batters in seven conference games this season. Dunne was named first team All-SEC for the second straight season.
Overall on the season Dunne enters NCAA postseason play with a 27-4 record and a 2.00 ERA. Dunne has struck out 308 in 185 2/3 innings while opponents are hitting at a .180 clip. The junior has won her last 14 starts entering the regional.
Freshman Kayla Braud (Eugene, Ore.) earns the first-team honors on the heels of being named the SEC Freshman of the Year award, becoming the seventh member of the Crimson Tide and third in a row to snag the freshman honor. As a freshman Braud led the entire conference in runs scored (38), while ranking second in the league in batting average (.500), hits (42) and on-base percentage (.580). The freshman from Eugene, Ore., was named to both the first team All-SEC and freshman All-SEC teams.
Entering NCAA play the rookie leads the team with a .497 batting average, 84 hits, 68 runs and 40 stolen bases. Braud is on pace to break the Alabama single season batting average record of .467, held by former Tide great and Olympian Kelly Kretschman.
Sophomore Cassie Reilly-Boccia (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) earns all-region honors for the second consecutive season, this year being tabbed on the second-team. The sophomore broke the Alabama single season record of walks in a season by entering the postseason with 60 free passes - just two shy of the SEC record.
Reilly-Boccia currently sports a .299 average and has nine home runs with 31 RBI. She showcases a .567 slugging percentage and a .520 on base percentage. The outfielder has scored 45 runs and sports a 60/22 strikeout/walk ratio.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.
The NFCA Division I All-American teams will be announced at 4 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, June 2.
