TUSCALOOSA, ALA – No. 6 seed Southern Illinois propelled itself into the championship game here at the NCAA Region 8 Softball Tournament by beating No. 3 seed UMass 6-1.
Southern Illinois got a complete game from Amy Harre (22-9) who pitched three innings in a loss to Alabama in the day’s first game. Holtz (23-9) took the loss for UMass, who is now eliminated. All six of Southern Illinois’ runs came in the first four innings, with four of those runs coming off three homeruns. Junior Jenny Doehring homered in the first inning, driving in junior Lindsey Bonnell. Sophomore Maria Damico led off the second inning with a solo shot and freshman Katie Louis homered to center field to lead off the fourth inning.
With a bid to the College World Series on the line, the Salukis will have to beat Alabama twice to win Region 8. If a second game between Alabama and SIU is necessary, it will be played Monday (May 19).
