ATHENS, GA—The Bama bats came to life in the third game of the series as the seventh ranked Tide (50-11, 20-7 SEC) recorded a season high 16 hits en route to a 13-3 victory over the 11th ranked Georgia Bulldogs (48-12, 26-4).
The win was Alabama’s 50th of the season, the third time in program history the team has reached the 50-win plateau.
For the second straight game, Alabama claimed the early lead, again courtesy of the bat of Stephanie VanBrakle (JR, Chambersburg, Pa.). Jordan Praytor (FR, Vancouver, Wash.) reached on a one-out hit-by-pitch. Ashley Courtney (SR, Vero Beach, Fla.) reached on an error by Georgia shortstop Katie Vickers advancing Praytor to second. VanBrakle then delivered her seventh home run of the season, a three-run shot over the scoreboard in left field for a 3-0 Alabama lead.
The Bulldogs answered in the bottom half of the first with two runs cutting the Tide lead to 3-2.
Alabama responded in the top of the second scoring two more runs. Emily Currie (SR, Huntsville, Ala.) led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a walk to Dani Woods (FR, Cockeysville, Md.). Leah White (SR, Grayson, Ga.) advanced both runners on a ground out and both came in to score on a single back up the middle by Jackie Wilkins (SR, Miami, Fla.) pushing the Tide lead back to three runs at 5-2.
The Crimson Tide added to its lead in the fourth plating two more runs starting with back-to-back singles by Praytor and Courtney to lead off the inning. VanBrakle reached on an error by Georgia third baseman Jessica Doucette loading the bases and Dominique Accetturo (JR, Pembroke Pines, Fla.) punched a single through the right side scoring Praytor and Courtney giving Bama a 7-2 lead.
Georgia answered in the bottom of the fourth on a run scoring double by Katie Vickers cutting the Tide lead back to 7-3.
Alabama pushed its lead back to five runs at 8-3 in the sixth taking advantage of two Georgia miscues. Capper Reed (SR, Guntersville, Ala.), pinch-hitting for Staci Ramsey (JR, Houston, Texas), drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on two Georgia throwing errors. Reed came in to score on a ground out by Emily Currie (SR, Huntsville, Ala.).
The Tide kept the pressure applied in the seventh inning adding five more runs on six hits sending nine batters to the plate.
VanBrakle (25-5) collected the win in relief allowing one run on six hits in six innings of work.
Wilkins and Praytor picked up three hits each for the Tide while VanBrakle, Accetturo and Woods each collected two.
In the second game of the series that started Saturday night, Bama jumped on top in the first beginning with a two-out, run scoring single by VanBrakle. Wilkins led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a bunt single by Praytor. Courtney hit into a fielder’s choice with Wilkins being tagged out on the play. Bama attempted a double-steal but Praytor was cut down at third before VanBrakle delivered her RBI single.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the third when Tide starting pitcher Jennifer Wright (SR, Brentwood, Tenn.) was called for an illegal pitch allowing Kelsey Todd to score from third.
Georgia claimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out single by Katie Vickers scoring Jessica Gilmore for a 2-1 lead.
The Tide came storming back in the top of the fifth beginning with a one-out walk by Woods. Deasy Phillips (SR, Katy, Texas) came on to pinch run for Woods and advanced to third on a single by White. White stole second and Wilkins reached on a fielder’s choice scoring Phillips from third, tying the game at 2-2. Wilkins stole second and came in to score with White on a single by Praytor putting Bama back in front 4-2.
The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when, with the bases loaded, Jessica Doucette lined a ball back up the middle that deflected off Accetturo’s glove at shortstop resulting in a bases-clearing double for the final 5-4 margin.
Wright (16-4) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits.
