TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Charlotte Morgan started her freshman year with the University of Alabama softball team in strong fashion, earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors following the first weekend of the 2007 season.
Morgan, a freshman from Moreno Valley, Calif., is the first player from California to sign with the Crimson Tide softball team in this its’ 11th season. She earned starts in all five games this past weekend as Alabama opened the year 5-0 and claimed the Century-Tel Softball Classic Championship with an 11-1 victory over Oklahoma State in San Marcos, Texas.
Four of her five starts came at first base while she also drew her first nod as the starting pitcher in the Tide’s third contest against Texas-San Antonio. She started her collegiate career by reaching base in her first four plate appearances. She went 1-for-1 with a single, two walks and her first RBI in her first collegiate game against Oklahoma State. She also singled in her first at bat against Texas State and scored a run. In the championship game against the Cowboys, she went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.
At the end of the first game against OSU, she came in to relieve Chrissy Owens on the mound in the fifth inning. She faced just three batters and sent them down 1-2-3 with one strikeout in one inning of work to close out the ball game. The next day against UTSA she earned her first start and pitched a complete game going seven innings with four hits, three runs, two earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts to receive her first win of her career.
She finished the weekend 4-for-8 with one run scored and one RBI. She also had three walks to give her an impressive .636 on base percentage.
Morgan and the Tide will play at home for the first time this weekend when they host Toledo, Michigan State and Radford in the 10th annual Hampton Inn BAMA BASH! Alabama will play at 3 and 5 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday before the bracket play continues Saturday afternoon. The championship and consolation games will be played on Sunday.
