No. 1 Softball Closes Out Easton Challenge with 10-1 Win
March 8, 2009
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In the final contest of the Easton Challenge the No. 1 ranked Alabama softball team earned a 10-1 win over No. 24 Baylor Sunday afternoon at the UA Softball Complex. Whitney Larsen had a big day for the Crimson Tide, batting 3-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBI. Charlotte Morgan earned her sixth win to help Alabama improve to 17-2 on the season. “It was good to get two wins over Baylor and it was definitely a good split with Washington,” head coach Patrick Murphy said. “It was definitely the strongest four-team tournament in the country this year. We are going to work on some things and we feel this is the strongest pitching we have seen prior to the start of conference.” Alabama banged out 12 hits and scored in bunches to earn its third win over a top 25 team on the weekend. Larsen got the Tide up in a hurry when she drilled a grand slam over the left field wall to give Alabama a 4-0 lead in the first. With two strikes Larsen took Baylor pitcher Whitney Canion deep to plate Lisa Elizondo, Kelley Montalvo and Brittany Rogers. The Tide then added three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to run away with the win. Larsen struck again when she singled up the middle to bring home Morgan. Lauren Parker then followed suit with a single of her own that drove in Larsen and Jennifer Fenton. Fenton then provided some punch of her own when she belted her second career home run. The newcomer connected on a 0-2 pitch that sailed over the left-center field wall for the three run shot in the seventh. On top of the three hits by Larsen, Rogers and Fenton collected two hits apiece. Rogers also swiped two bags and four different members of the Tide scored two runs each. Four different Baylor players collected a hit with Alex Coyler hitting a solo shot in the sixth. Morgan tossed five innings and allowed one run on one hit in relief to earn the win in front of 2075 fans. Alabama will play UAB on Tuesday, March 10 in Birmingham.
