TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama freshman midfielder Merel Van Dongen (Amsterdam, Netherlands) was once again recognized for her standout play during her rookie campaign. Van Dongen now adds to her list of accolades NSCAA All-South Region honors, the organization announced.
Van Dongen, who was named to the second team, was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Freshmen Team of the Season as well as becoming the first Alabama player to be named the SEC Freshman of the Year. The midfielder was also named to the all-freshman team.
Van Dongen earned the accolades after scoring nine points on three goals and three assists. Seven of the nine points were recorded during league play.
The Netherlands native was second on the team among field players in minutes played with 1,609. She started all 19 matches for the Crimson Tide. As the season went on the newcomer got more comfortable, scoring two goals and handing out two assists in the final eight matches on the year.
