TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Rolltide.com and the Alabama women's soccer team have started a new weekly segment called 11 Questions. Select players and coaches will check in weekly on Rolltide.com and answer questions pertaining to things on and off the field. The second edition features senior midfielder Kailey Corken.
Rolltide.com: Being a senior what kind of leader do you think you are?
Kailey Corken: I think I am the kind of leader who leads by example. I try to always walk away from the field having left everything, and I hope it gives the underclassmen a little bit of motivation watching upperclassmen give it all.
Rolltide.com: With this being your last season at Alabama what is something you wish to accomplish?
Corken: I just hope I can walk away from each game with no regrets and really playing to the best of my ability every game we play.
Rolltide.com: How has the new coaching staff been and how is the transition?
Corken: It's been really exciting and different. When you come in freshmen year you're terrified and you are doing everything you can to earn respect. This past spring with the new coaching staff was like freshmen year all over again. We all had a clean slate, and even the rising seniors had to work to prove themselves to the new coaches.
Rolltide.com: What are the team goals and what are some of your personal goals for the season?
Corken: We just really want to go to the SEC tournament this year. We really have the opportunity to do something amazing this year, and it would be nice to make it to the tournament for my senior year!
Rolltide.com: What matches are you most looking forward to?
Corken: I'm really looking forward to the game in California against USC because coming into the game against them they are ranked #1 in the nation. I'm excited to play this level of competition and see how good our program here at Bama really is.
Rolltide.com: Do you have a favorite professional soccer team and why?
Corken: Although, the team is not considered "professional" everyone who plays for this team does play professional soccer. I always, always, always support the Portugal national team. They always look so calm in games, and always assume they'll win every game. Luis Figo of Portugal, my favorite player recently retired, but they still have the most creative soccer player in the game (and the best looking), Cristiano Ronaldo...hello!
Rolltide.com: What is on your IPOD right now?
Corken: Haha. I don't have an iPod, but I do have a little shuffle thing. I am not that interested with listening to music before games. I probably have some John Mayer, Sarah Bareilles, and Colbie Calliet. Haha my music is real mellow.
Rolltide.com: What is your favorite pregame meal?
Corken: Well, traditionally we go to Jason's before home games... so Jason's has a little special place in my heart. I love Panera though!
Rolltide.com: When and why did you start playing the game of soccer?
Corken: I started playing soccer when I was 4 years. My parents signed me up for every sport possible as a child. Everything! But soccer was special and I guess it just stuck.
Rolltide.com: Why did you choose to go to the University of Alabama?
Corken: Warm weather! I have to have sunlight. It makes me happy! The campus is beautiful, the soccer facilities are the best in the country, the coaches really made me feel welcome, and the football is insane. What more could you want?
Rolltide.com: What do you plan to do after you graduate?
Corken: I hope to go somewhere in the world and finish becoming fluent in my major, Spanish. Then I want to go to grad school and maybe become a Spanish professor. No solid plans yet, but wherever my life takes me!
