TUSCALOOSA, Ala. The Futbol Internacional Soccer Tournament is bringing an international soccer game between China and Trinidad-Tobago to the Alabama Soccer Complex, on the campus of the University of Alabama. The international exhibition game is scheduled for Thursday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m.
“Being selected to host two of the world’s top women’s national teams says so much about how Tuscaloosa is being perceived both within the state, region and internationally,” Alabama head soccer coach Don Staley said. “This event just goes to show what having dynamic leadership at the local level can achieve, they have and the willingness to think outside the box as it relates to special events.”
Futbol Internacional 2007 is one of only four worldwide international women’s soccer events of its kind outside the Olympic Games and World Cup. Futbol Internacional will be held in several different locations throughout Alabama, including Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, Decatur and Mobile. The event features national women’s teams from Argentina, Canada, China, Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico and the USA (under 21 team).
“This will be a great opportunity for the University of Alabama and the City of Tuscaloosa to showcase our beautiful city, campus and facilities,” Staley added. “I truly hope the community will recognize the significance this match and open its arms to our international guests by attending the match.”
Proceeds from Futbol Internacional will aid the development of a youth soccer complex in Mobile County and support a youth soccer scholarship fund, among other projects.
