TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team opened the 2014 spring campaign with a pair of shutout victories on Saturday. The Crimson Tide defeated Montevallo, 5-0, in the morning match, followed by a 1-0 defeat over West Alabama in the afternoon.
In the opening contest against Montevallo, Alabama received a pair of goals and an assist from forward Danielle Herubin, while midfielder Laura Lee Smith and true freshman Lacey Clarida each recorded a goal and an assist. Forward Pia Rijsdijk also found the back of the net. Goalkeepers Emily Rusk and Whitney Roberts combined for the shutout.
Against West Alabama, Rusky was again the netminder, playing the entire 90 minutes in net to record the shutout. Rijsdijk scored her second goal of the day when she finished off a loose ball after a free kick from defender Jordan Meier.
Newcomer Moira Petrie also saw her first career action for the Crimson Tide.
The Tide will return to action on Tuesday night when it hosts the Ghana Under-17 National Team at 7 p.m. at the Alabama Soccer Complex. Admission is free for all fans.
