Late Goal Lifts Alabama Soccer Team Past UAB, 1-0

TUSCALOOSA, Ala - Alabama sophomore midfielder Merel Van Dongen scored the game-winning goal at the 85:38 mark to lead the Crimson Tide past UAB, 1-0, on Sunday night at the Alabama Soccer Complex.

With the win Alabama improves to 2-5 overall, which includes a 2-1 mark in home games, while the Blazers fall to 6-2 on the campaign.

UA's lone goal came off a direct free kick from senior Kendall Khanna, which found the head of Van Dongen. The Amsterdam, Netherlands, native drilled a header, which hit off the far post and ricocheted into the back of the net.

Van Dongen has now scored all four goals on the year for the Crimson Tide. Goalkeeper Emily Rusk earned her first career shutout, making one save in the winning effort.

The Crimson Tide was in control for most of the match, outshooting UAB, 28-8. Van Dongen and Molly Atherton led the onslaught with each recording five shots on the night.

Alabama will next be in action when it opens Southeastern Conference play at No. 9 Florida on Friday night at 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET).
