KENNESAW, Ga.- The Alabama soccer team opened its 2012 season with a 1-0 victory over Kennesaw State, Friday night at KSU Stadium. It marks the third season in a row the Crimson Tide has earned a win in its season opener.
A pair of newcomers lifted the Tide to victory on the new season. Freshman forward Katie Bourgeois scored early in the second half off a throw in by senior Meghan Duffy that was flicked on by senior Kaitlyn Smithand the tally would hold as the new look Alabama defense did the rest.
Bourgeois handled the throw in and from the top left side of the 18, the rookie found the back of the net in the 57th minute.
Junior transfer goalkeeper Shelby Churchrecorded the clean sheet in her first start in a Crimson Tide uniform. The newcomer tallied one save in the winning effort.
Alabama kept the pressure on KSU for most of the match as the Tide outshot the Owls, 19-4. Sophomore Pia Rijsdijkpaced Alabama with four shots, putting one on frame. UA held KSU to just two shots in each half and sported a 12-2 advantage heading into the locker room at the intermission.
Alabama will now have a week to prepare for its home opener as it faces instate foe Samford on Friday, August, 24, with kickoff slated for 6 p.m., at the Alabama Soccer Stadium.
