TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - In the Alabama rowing team's second competition of the season, the Novice squad will send a pair of boats to Huntsville, Ala. for the Hobbs Island Regatta.
"Derek Tuten, who coaches our novices, has taken some of the ladies who competed last week at the Chattanooga Head Race and put together some combinations that will provide some leadership to both crews and make them more confident going into the weekend."
The Crimson Tide sent one boat of Novices to the season-opening Chattanooga Head Race last weekend and will take two 8+ boats to Huntsville. One crew will compete in the Championship 8+ race while the other will take part in the Novice 8+ race.
"Just as we did at this regatta last year, we're rowing in both the Championship 8+, with more experienced rowers, and in the Novice 8+," Davis said. "Last year we were able to come away with wins in both races. Derek has done a good job and the ladies seem to be excited and pumped up for this weekend so we'll see if we can win both again this year."
Alabama's Novices opened up the season with a commanding win in the Chattanooga race, with coxswain Kara Averell and rowers Jennifer Arcidiacono, Roisin O'Carroll, Mary Hauswirth, Jamie Camp, Kelli O'Brien, Blair Scott, Bethany Bell and Kayla Wilson combining to finish nearly a minute ahead of their nearest competition.
The Tide gets things underway at 10 a.m. with the Championship 8+ race on the Tennessee River.
