TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama rowing team hosts Central Florida and West Virginia in its only home regatta of the season on Saturday, April 6, with races starting at 9:30 a.m., on the Black Warrior River. The meet is sponsored by Tuscaloosa Toyota as it will mark the Pink regatta for the Tide.
"The girls are really pumped and we're looking for some good competition," Alabama head rowing coach Larry Davis said. "It's our Power of Pink meet. It's also our senior day. All of those things just go to add a higher level of energy."
Saturday is also Senior Day for the Crimson Tide, which is in its seventh year as an NCAA Division I program. The Tide will honor Kiffy Balchon, Tabitha Coleman, Jessica Parker, and Canella Tinker in the last home race of their careers.
"I think that if everybody is on their numbers, we have the opportunity to win all of the races, but it is not going to be an easy task because both Central Florida and West Virginia are very tough competitors," Davis said.
The Alabama rowing team has a good record for previously hosted home meets. In 2010, the Tide won 3out of 5 races against Oklahoma and Old Dominion. In 2011, the Tide defeated its Conference USA rival Central Florida, followed by a win over Iowa in 2012.
"Being able to go out and be familiar with what you are doing on your race course with no unusual factors that you're not aware of gives us a little advantage, just like any home court advantage would," Davis added. "So we are really excited."
The best place for viewing the races Saturday will be at Manderson Landing, which is located at the intersection of Jack Warner Parkway and McCorvey Drive.
