OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -
The Alabama rowing team finished seventh at the Conference USA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Melton Hill Lake with 20 points, a single point out of sixth place.
"We rowed about up to our capabilities at this point," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "I thought on the whole our second races were better than our first."
The Crimson Tide is an affiliate member of C-USA in rowing, competing against SMU, Tulsa, and Central Florida, along with fellow affiliate members Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Tennessee scored 53 points to win the 2012 crown, its second in a row, followed by Texas, which took second with 44 points.
Alabama senior Leigh Ann Terch was honored as a member of the 2012 All-Conference USA Team in a ceremony after the championships.
"Leigh Ann made the First Varsity 8+ mid-way through the season and really led by example," Davis said. "We had a number of standouts among our senior class, and Leigh Ann has been very tenacious throughout, earning her way into the stern pair of the 1V8. She's been a hustler throughout her career."
The Crimson Tide turned in its best finish in the Second Varsity 8+, taking fourth with a time of 7:06.79.
"We made some improvement as we went through the day," Davis said. "Our Second Varsity 8+ had our best showing on the day, taking fourth place, just out of the medals in the grand final. That boat was the most consistent between prelims and finals. In finals, they made a charge at the end, almost catching Oklahoma."
Alabama was eighth in both the First Varsity 8+ and the First Varsity 4+, crossing the finish line with times of 7:08.19 and 8:09.12 respectively. The Tide's Novice 8+ was also eighth with a time of 7:39.21.
