Rowing Wins Four of Six on Sunday vs. St. Mary's

March 23, 2014

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - Right on the heels of a successful day on the water Saturday, Alabama squared off against St. Mary's on Sunday on Lake Natoma, earning four wins against the Gaels.

"We moved forward in a lot of areas, though our Varsity 8 is still struggling a bit," said Head Coach Larry Davis. "With them, it's just a matter of getting them to perform at their highest level. All the 4s did a great job, they handled the competition well. The only freshman boat we took did a good job sprinting at the end."

Alabama's Varsity 4 was well ahead of St. Mary's, beating them by over 16 seconds in 8:10.3. The Tide's Second and Third Varsity 4s earned wins as well, finishing in 8:14.4 and 8:16.6, respectively. The Novice 8 tacked on Alabama's fourth win of the day, crossing the finish line in 7:24.7, just under 10 seconds ahead of St. Mary's boat. Alabama's Varsity 8 finished in 7:16.3 and the Second Varsity 8 finished in 7:07.1.

"Our winners were putting things in place," said Davis. "The Second 8 had a good row but they are still working on a few things. We'll look to improve on some things but overall it was a great day. The weather was good and it's been great for the development of the team. It has been a very productive weekend and it was great to get four wins today and two yesterday."

Alabama has a week off of competition next weekend, though they return to action on Saturday, April 5 as they host SMU and Eastern Michigan for a meet on the Black Warrior River.

"When we get back, we're going to unwind a bit but for the rest of spring break we'll be training," said Davis. "We'll try and clean up some things and get ourselves up to the level we're capable of. Each time we've gotten a few more wins under our belt and want to keep improving. Our goal over the next week and a half is to get all those thing squared away."
