RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – Alabama rowing continued its spring season Saturday on Lake Natoma, earning a pair of wins in the Varsity 4 and Second Varsity 4 against Sacramento State and San Diego State.

“Overall it was a good day for us,” said Head Coach Larry Davis. “I was really pleased to see how some of the crews came through. Our fours did a little better than our eights. We had a chance to test ourselves against some tough crews today. Both of them will be in competing in our conference championships this year so it was good to have a chance to see them earlier in the season.”

Alabama’s Varsity 4 crossed the finish in 7:45.9, four seconds ahead of Sacramento State in second place at 7:49.6. The finish is a new season best for the Varsity 4 boat, improving on their 8:10.33 finish last weekend. The Tide’s Second Varsity 4 earned a narrow victory over those same Hornets, beating them by just over two seconds with a season-best 7:52.2 finish.

“The thing I really thought was great was how the First 4 and Second 4 raced with more assertiveness and confidence this week,” said Davis.  “In the Varsity 4 we took it right away and maintained it. When crews challenged them, they responded. The Second 4 was down with about 500 meters to go and they kept pushing and their combined effort helped them to the win. It was good to see them pick it up and now we want to get all our crews racing with that much confidence.”

Alabama’s Second Varsity 8 shaved nine seconds off their best finish from last week, racing in 7:06.8 on Saturday. The Tide’s Novice 8 also saw an improvement of nearly 12 seconds, placing in 7:20.3 today. Alabama’s Varsity 8 finished in 7:10.9.

“We will be looking to do some things to correct our Varsity 8s,” said Davis, “but our 4s really started clicking today and had some opportunities. It was great to compete at a venue that’s used for NCAA competition very often and the weather was very nice. We’re excited to race again tomorrow vs. St. Mary’s.”

Tomorrow, Alabama will compete in a dual meet against St. Mary’s on Lake Natoma, beginning at 10:30 p.m. CT.
