BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Alabama gymnastics team placed both of its 2013 freshmen - All-American Lauren Beersand Carly Sims - on the First-Year Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll commissioner Mike Slive announced this week.
"I'm very proud of Lauren and Carly and what they accomplished in the classroom during their freshman year," UA head coach Sarah Patterson said. "One of the pillars of our program is that year-in and year-out, our ladies are going to strive for excellence at the highest level in all that they do and this year was certainly no exception."
To earn a place on the honor roll, a student-athlete must have completed at least two semesters of study and carry 3.0 or better grade point average.
The Tide's gymnastics rookies were joined on the 2013 SEC Academic Honor Roll by 14 upperclassmen, who earned the honor in April, including Becca Alexin, All-American Kaitlyn Clark, All-American Sarah DeMeo, Hunter Dennis, Ria Domier, Lindsey Fowler, Lora Leigh Frost, All-American Marissa Gutierrez, All-American Kim Jacob, NCAA Champion and All-American Diandra Milliner, Brooke Parker, All-American Ashley Priess, All-American Ashley Sledge and All-American Kayla Williams.
The Alabama gymnastics team's overall 2013 total of 16 led the conference and boosts the Tide's all-time total to 262, which is more than two dozen better than the next highest total among the SEC gymnastics squads.
