TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama All-American gymnast Kassi Price has been awarded a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship it was announced Friday.
"What a tremendous honor this is for Kassi," Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services Jon Dever said. "She has had a remarkable career as a student-athlete from the moment first she stepped on campus through today. I think it's safe to say that the credit goes not only to her, and her tremendous work ethic, but her parents, coaches and the community that has helped nurture her as well. We're very proud of her and all she's accomplished."
Price, who earlier this spring earned a Southeastern Conference Postgraduate Scholarship, is the 11th UA gymnast to earn an NCAA scholarship and the seventh to come away with both NCAA and SEC postgraduate scholarships.
"Kassi has done an amazing job of carrying on the Alabama gymnastics' legacy of excellence in both the classroom and the gym," UA head coach Sarah Patterson said. "I am so proud of all she has accomplished during her Crimson Tide career. With this latest honor, she joins a long line of Alabama gymnasts who have had the opportunity to further their education with this prestigious scholarship."
Alabama leads the nation in NCAA Postgraduate scholarships with nearly twice as many as any other gymnastics program. The Tide's 11 scholarships are followed by three schools that are tied with six each.
The NCAA scholarship is just the latest honor for Price. During the recent national championships, the three-year All-American was awarded the inaugural Elite 88 award, given to the top student at each of the NCAA's championships. She also earned the Paul W. Bryant Award, given annually to the athletics department's top student-athlete.
A two-time member of the CoSIDA Academic All-American At-Large Team, the Plantation, Fla., native is a double major in marketing and advertising and carries a perfect 4.0 GPA for her career. Earlier this spring she earned the Austin Cup, which is awarded each year to the top senior in UA's Culverhouse School of Commerce and Business Administration.
The vice president of Alabama's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, she was named to the SEC Community Service Team this season. A member of the Tide's 2009 SEC Championship team, she is a three-time NCAA Regional Champion and a four-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
In addition to Price (2010 - SEC and NCAA), the Tide's list of postgraduate scholarship winners includes: Stephanie Kite (2004 - NCAA), Kristin Sterner (2003 - SEC and NCAA), Andreé Pickens (2002 - SEC), Merritt Booth (1998 - NCAA), Meredith Willard (1997 - SEC and NCAA), Dana Dobransky (1993 - SEC and NCAA), Katherine Kelleher (1992 - SEC and NCAA), Marie Robbins (1990 - SEC), Kelly Good (1989 - SEC and NCAA), Julie Estin (1987 - SEC and NCAA), Barbara Mack (1985 - NCAA) and Julie Garrett (1983 - NCAA).
