BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
A pair of Alabama gymnasts were honored by the Southeastern Conference the league office announced Tuesday, with senior Diandra Milliner being named the SEC Gymnast of the Week while Katie Bailey was recognized as the SEC Freshman of the Week.
Milliner earned the honor after posting a career-best 39.525 to win the Perfect 10 Challenge all-around title. It was her first time in the all-around competition since midway through her sophomore season. The Wichita, Kan., native capped the Crimson Tide's night with a season-best 9.975 vault, which led UA to a season-best 49.550 team score on the event.
Bailey posted her fourth 39.3 or better score in the all-around at the Perfect 10 Challenge, with a 39.350, a mark that included a career-best 9.9 on the vault. She led off the Tide's uneven bars lineup with a 9.85, stepping in for a sidelined Sarah DeMeo who normally gets Alabama's uneven bars rotation started.
Bailey's honor marked the fourth time in the first seven weeks of the season that an Alabama gymnast has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week. Bailey's classmate Aja Sims won the award on Feb. 18, while Bailey also earned the accolade on Jan. 14 and Feb. 4.
Milliner is the second UA gymnast to earn SEC Gymnast of the Week honors, following fellow senior Kim Jacob who earned it on Jan. 14. Jacob was also named the SEC Specialist of the Week on Feb. 11 to give Alabama seven total SEC honors to this point in the season.
After two weeks on the road, Alabama returns to Coleman Coliseum this Friday at 7:30 p.m. to take on the defending NCAA Champion Florida Gators. It will be Alabama's fourth home meet of the season and first since beating Georgia on Feb. 7. Tickets for the Tide's home meets and the SEC and NCAA Championships are on sale through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum, and online at RollTide.com.
