AUBURN, Ala. -
The No. 5 Alabama gymnastics team takes to the road this week, traveling to Auburn, Ala. to take on the No. 12 Auburn Tigers Friday at 7 p.m. in Auburn Arena.
“Auburn is a great gymnastics team,” UA head coach Sarah Patterson said. “I feel certain that this meet will be sold out and that we will go in there with a target on our back and I’m excited to go down there and let our ladies respond and show the pride in our program.”
It will be the Crimson Tide’s sixth meet of the season and third away meet. Alabama is coming off a win against Southeastern Conference rival Georgia last Friday when the Tide posted its highest score of the season, 197.500, along with its fourth-best floor exercise score in school history, a 49.625.
Auburn is coming off of back-to-back road wins, including its first win in program history at Arkansas. Overall, the Tigers are 3-2 with a 1-1 record at home. Auburn is led by fourth-year head coach Jeff Graba along with junior Bri Guy and sophomore Caitlin Atkinson - who are ranked 16th and 19th, respectively, in the all-around - along with Megan Walker who is ranked 9th on balance beam.
Senior Kim Jacob - who is ranked 14th in the all-around, 12th on the balance beam, 19th on the uneven bars, and 24th on the floor exercise - is leading the way for the Tide. She is the defending SEC Gymnastics Specialist of the Week after tying her career best of 9.95 on the floor exercise against Georgia.
Alabama and Auburn last met at the Southeastern Conference Championships where the Tide finished second and the Tigers were fifth. In its last regular season meeting, Alabama beat Auburn 197.650-196.575 in Tuscaloosa. In the Tide’s last three meets at Auburn, the meet has come down to the last competitor for each team with Alabama winning all three meets by less than a tenth of a point each time.
Friday is the first of two regular-season meetings between the instate rivals this season. The Tigers will travel to Tuscaloosa to compete in Alabama’s regular-season finale on March 14 in Coleman Coliseum.
