CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Alabama's Jennifer Kirby defeated Brittany Altomare 4 & 3 in the first round of match play at the 2010 U.S. Women's Amateur at Charlotte Country Club on Wednesday.

Kirby advances to the Round of 32 where she will take on Doris Chen tomorrow at 6:50 a.m. (CDT). If Kirby defeats Chen she will then play the winner of the match between Sara-Maude Juneau and Emily Tubert later in the day at 12:10 (CDT) in the Round of 16.

After shooting a combined 146 (76-70) during stroke play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday, Kirby was seeded No. 25 heading into Wednesday's opening match play session against the 40th seeded Altomare. Kirby led in 12 of the 15 holes with a steady round that featured two birdies and only one bogey. Kirby closed out her match with Altomare with a birdie on the 15th hole.

The Alabama pair of Brooke Pancake and Stephanie Meadow were not as fortunate as Kirby, as both came up short in their first-round matches.

The No. 4 seed Pancake fell to 61st seeded Corrine Carr in an epic 20-hole match that ended on the second hole of sudden death. Pancake led for 13 of the 20 holes and never fell behind Carr until the final hole.

Meadow, who came into Wednesday as the No. 51 seed, played a valiant match but lost out to No. 14 seed Lizette Salas. Meadow's round consisted of three birdies to go along with only one bogey, but it wasn't enough to overcome Salas.
