Women's Golf Earns No. 1 Seed at NCAA East Regional

April 25, 2011

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The third-ranked Alabama women's golf team was awarded a No. 1 seed at the 2011 NCAA East Regional at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., the NCAA announced Monday afternoon.

The NCAA East Regional will be held on May 5-7 at the 6,271-yard, par-72 LPGA International and hosted by Stetson University. It is the sixth straight invitation to postseason competition for the Crimson Tide, who finished third at last season's NCAA Championship.

The top eight finishers at the NCAA East Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships at the Traditions Club on May 18-21 in Bryan, Texas, hosted by Texas A&M. Alabama won the Fall Preview back in September at the Traditions Club with a 15-under-par total of 849 to edge LSU by one stroke and Southern California by seven.

Since Potter's arrival at the Capstone prior to the 2005-06 season, the Crimson Tide has qualified for the NCAA tournament each season and advanced to the NCAA Championships five consecutive years. The 2011 selection is the 13th NCAA appearance in school history.

For Potter, the regional berth marks the 18th consecutive appearance by a team under his direction. The Hall of Fame coach has now led a team to a regional bid in each season since the format came into existence in 1993. Joining Alabama in the NCAA West Regional is No. 2-seed Purdue, which is the defending NCAA Champions, No. 3-seed California with No. 4 Arizona State and No. 5 Auburn rounding out the top-five seeds.

Vanderbilt, Florida, Mississippi, and Kentucky join the Crimson Tide out of the Southeastern Conference in the NCAA East Regional. The Commodores are seeded eighth, the Gators ninth, the Rebels 14th and the Wildcats 20th. The SEC had 11 of 12 teams qualify for the NCAA Tournament with only Mississippi State missing out.

Last season Alabama finished tied for third at the NCAA West Regional to earn a berth in the NCAA Championships. The Tide shot 38-over-par 890 to finish 14 shots back of Arizona. Camilla Lennarth led the way for the Crimson Tide with a 4-over-par 217 at the Stanford Golf Course at the Stanford University.
