TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama women's golf team begins postseason play Friday when it tees off in the first round of the 2014 SEC Championship held at the par-71, 6,050-yard Founders Course at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Ala.
Head coach Mic Potter's Alabama squad returns to Greystone after taking home their second SEC title in school history last year where they cruised to a 14-stroke victory over second-place Georgia, posting a 54-hole total of 35-over-par 899.
Stephanie Meadow became the Crimson Tide's first medalist since the tournament was started in 1981. She spearheaded Alabama's strong showing with an even-par 216 and finished nine strokes ahead of second place. Meadow leads the Crimson Tide in 2014 with a 71.00 scoring average and No. 3 national ranking.
Meadow, the 2013 SEC Player of the Year, will be joined by fellow senior and Birmingham native Hannah Collier, who is no stranger to the course. Collier is a member at Greystone and finished tied for 14th at the event a year ago.
Rounding out Alabama's lineup will be Emma Talley, Daniela Lendl and Janie Jackson. Talley returns to the lineup this weekend after missing the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic to play in the LPGA's Kraft Nabisco Championship. The 2013 U.S. Amateur champions comes into the weekend with a scoring average of 73.57. Lendl has played in every tournament this year for UA and is right behind Talley with an average of 74.31 average.
This weekend's field at the SEC Championship is one of the most challenging in collegiate golf with seven of the 14 SEC teams, including Alabama, currently ranked in Golfstat's Top 25. Arkansas holds the highest ranking at No. 4, followed by No. 6 South Carolina and No. 7 Alabama. Vanderbilt is ranked 13th, while LSU (No. 16), Florida (No. 19) and Auburn (No. 22) round out the top 25.
The three-day tournament is April 18-20 with 18 holes scheduled each day. Alabama will tee off at 9:20 a.m. Friday.
