ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 9 University of Alabama women's golf team shot 5-over 293 in the qualifying round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic Friday to earn the No. 3 seed heading into match play over the weekend.
The Crimson Tide will open match play against Mississippi State, who finished tied for fifth on Friday and earned the No. 6 seed on the par-72, 6,335-yard University of Georgia Golf Course. The Tide and Bulldogs are scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) with the winner facing the winner of the Arkansas-Denver match in the afternoon.
Senior Hannah Collier paced the Alabama attacked with a season-low 5-under-par 67. Collier made the turn at even par and moved to 1-over after a bogey on No. 11. That is where the Birmingham native caught fire with four straight birdies and six in her final seven holes to finish third individually.
Senior Stephanie Meadow carded a 1-over 73 and tied for 11th among the 80 players in the field. She birded her final three holes to get back to 1-under par and keep the Crimson Tide in the championship bracket. True freshman Mia Landegren played well in her first appearance in the Alabama lineup, shooting 3-over 75 and finishing in a tie for 22nd.
"If you can get through the front nine, you can make some birdies on the back," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said following the round. "The girls did a good job of staying patient and taking advantage of the holes you can make birdie on. We were still a little sloppy in spots, but I think we are making progress. The whole key for us is to improve on a daily basis."
Sophomore transfer Janie Jackson was the Crimson Tide's third counting score with a 6-over 78, and she tied for 45th. Junior Daniela Lendl was dropped from the team score and was 60th with an 8-over 80.
