ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 9 University of Alabama women's golf team begins play in the 42nd annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Friday at the par-72, 6,335-yard University of Georgia Golf Course.
The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic will have a different look in 2014, going to a match play format. The 16-team field will play one round of stroke-play qualifying on Friday and then be broken into two eight-team match play brackets. The Red Bracket will feature the top eight teams from qualifying with the Black Bracket for the remaining eight teams. Two rounds of match play are scheduled for Saturday followed by one round of match play on Sunday with the tournament champion being determined from the winner of the Red Bracket.
Along with Alabama, the field includes Arkansas, Auburn, Daytona State, Denver, Georgetown, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa State, Michigan State, Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Northwestern, Southern California, Texas A&M and Troy. The Tide is looking for its fourth Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic title after winning in 1987, 2011 and 2012.
The Crimson Tide's starting lineup will include the nation's No. 3 player Stephanie Meadow, sophomore Janie Jackson, junior Daniela Lendl, senior Hannah Collier and true freshman Mia Landegren. Alabama sophomore Emma Talley is not in the lineup in Athens because she is playing in the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the LPGA's first major of the 2014 season. Talley's 2013 U.S. Women's Amateur win earned her an exemption.
Meadow leads the Tide with a 70.9 scoring average and has four top-10 finishes in four career events at the University of Georgia Golf Course, including a tie for sixth at the 2013 NCAA Championships. Lendl is third on the team with a 74.45 stroke average. Landegren is playing her second collegiate tournament and her first a member of the Tide's starting lineup.
Alabama is slated to tee off at 7:40 a.m. (CDT) on Friday and will be playing with Northwestern and Denver.
