HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Alabama women's golf team begins play on Friday at the 2013 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,211-yard Long Cove Club.
The Crimson Tide won the weather-shortened Darius Rucker Intercollegiate last spring with a 36-hole total of 3-over-par 571. Junior Stephanie Meadow will also be looking to defend a title after capturing medalist honors with a 5-under 137 last spring.
The 2013 Darius Rucker Intercollegiate features one of the nation's most challenging fields. Along with the second-ranked Crimson Tide, the tournament will feature six teams inside the top 15 in the most recent WGCA Coaches' Poll including, No. 4 North Carolina, No. 8 Arkansas, No. 10 Vanderbilt, No. 12 Georgia and No. 14 Arizona State.
No. 20 Virginia is also in the field along with Auburn, Furman, LSU, South Carolina, TCU, No. 27 Tennessee, Central Florida and Wake Forest.
Head coach Mic Potter will start Stephanie Meadow, Jennifer Kirby, Hannah Collier, Emma Talley and Daniela Lendl for Alabama this weekend.
The 54-hole event begins on Friday, March 8, with the Crimson Tide teeing off at 8:15 a.m. (CST). Alabama will be paired with North Carolina and Arizona State in the first round. The Darius Rucker Intercollegiate concludes on Sunday, March 9.
The Crimson Tide opened the spring with a victory at the Puerto Rico Classic before a seventh-place finish at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.
