TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 2 Alabama women's golf team is in second place Saturday at 8-under-par 568 after firing a 4-under-par 284 in the second round of the PING/ASU Invitational on the par-72, 6,233-yard Karsten Golf Course.
The Crimson Tide is one shot ahead of top-ranked Southern California (-7, 569) and four shots behind third-ranked Duke (-12, 564) heading into Sunday's final round. Stanford is in fourth at 5-under 571 after shooting 6-under 282 while host Arizona State and Arizona are tied for fifth at 4-under 572. The Sun Devils 7-under 281 was the lowest round of the day.
"We hit a lot of good shots, but just like yesterday, we didn't convert very many putts," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "We didn't take advantage of the par 5s the way we should have, but we also avoided big mistakes and made pars when we were in trouble. It is the kind of course where I feel like we should shoot a little lower, but we played pretty solid."
Freshman Emma Talley continued her assault on the individual leader board with a second-round 69 to move her into second place alone at 7-under-par 137. The 137 is the lowest 36-hole total of the Princeton, Ky., native's Alabama career. She is one shot off the lead of Southern California's Rachel Morris (68-68/137).
Stephanie Meadow bounced back from a difficult-opening round with a 3-under-par round of 69 on Saturday to get to 1-under 143 for the tournament and move into a tie for 18th. The junior fired a bogey-free round that featured back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes and then a birdie-2 on the 153-yard 16th hole.
Junior Hannah Collier carded an even-par round of 72 with three birdies and three bogeys to give UA a solid third score. Senior Jennifer Kirby and sophomore Daniela Lendl both shot 74 in round two. Lendl is tied for 26th at even par while Kirby is tied for 35th at 2-over 146.
Alabama will play with No. 3 Duke and No. 1 USC in Sunday's final round at the Karsten Golf Course. The Crimson Tide then returns home for the SEC Championship at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Ala., on April 19-21.
