ATHENS, Ga. - The Alabama women's golf team dropped a 3-2 decision to Auburn Sunday in the final round of match play at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on the par-72, 6,335-yard University of Georgia Golf Course to finish sixth.
Before the Crimson Tide could get their final match underway Sunday morning, they had to finish their second match from Saturday that was called due to darkness. Janie Jackson was 1 down with one hole to play when her match resumed and the sophomore won the hole to halve the match. The match finished tied at 2.5 each and the Tide earned the win based on margin of victory to move on and face Auburn in the fifth-place match.
Against the Tigers, Hannah Collier once again paced the Alabama attack with a 5 and 4 victory over Auburn's Diana Fernandez that saw her win the fourth, sixth, seventh, ninth and 14th holes. The senior from Birmingham, Ala., never lost a hole Sunday and finished match play with a perfect 3-0 record.
"It was really good to have Hannah back in form," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "She really played well this weekend and that is a huge lift to this team. Mia (Landegren) also played well, and the experience she has gotten this spring is only going to be a benefit. Other than that, this weekend was a little bit of a struggle. We have a lot of work to do before SECs and not a lot of time to do it in, so we have to get home and get back to work."
Senior Stephanie Meadow captured a 2 and 1 victory in come-from-behind fashion over Marta Sanz. Meadow fell two back when she lost the ninth hole but she quickly rebound to get back in the match. She made birdie on the par 4 10th to move to 1 down and evened the match with a par on the 11th. Meadow moved 1 up on the 14th and then 2 up with a birdie on the 15th. She halved the 17th with birdie to seal the win.
Auburn came through with three wins to claim victory as Victoria Trapani defeated Tide freshman Mia Landegren 4 and 2. Daniela Lendl dropped a 7 and 5 decision to Clara Baena while Janie Jackson fell 2 and 1 to Alex Harrell.
The Crimson Tide return to action on April 18-20 at the SEC Championships on the Founders Course at Greystone Country Club. Alabama captured the SEC title a year ago at Greystone.
