The Alabama women's golf team opened the 2014 spring schedule Sunday at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic with a 7-over 295 on the par-72, 6,191-yard River Course at the Wyndham Rio Resort and Mar Country Club.
The 10th-ranked Crimson Tide is in second place, seven shots behind No. 9 Arkansas, who carded an even-par 288 in the opening round. Iowa State is in third place, one shot back of the Tide at 8-over 296 while North Carolina State and GRU Augusta is tied for fourth at 9-over 297. Georgia and Auburn are tied for sixth at 298.
Northport native and redshirt freshman Cammie Gray paced the Alabama attack on Sunday with an even-par 72 that put her in a tie for sixth place after 18 holes. She made four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on the round to leave her four shots back of individual leader Emily Tubert of Arkansas (68).
Sophomore Emma Talley and junior Daniela Lendl both tied for 18th after firing 2-over-par 74s in the first round. Talley, from Princeton, Ky., made two birdies and four bogeys, while Vero Beach, Fla., Lendl carded five bogeys and three birdies.
Senior Stephanie Meadow carded a 3-over 75, which was her highest round of the year. The native of Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, made double bogey on the first and third holes to fall back early. She responded with birdies on the fifth and 15th holes before making bogey on 17 and par on 18 to close out her round. Sophomore Janie Jackson's 78 was the Tide's drop score.
Alabama will be in the first pairing off the tee Monday morning in the second round on the River Course at 6 a.m. (CST, 8 a.m. Atlantic). The Crimson Tide will be playing with Arkansas and Iowa State. Alabama has won the Lady Puerto Rico Classic the last four times they participated (2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013).
