BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Alabama men's and women's basketball teams took part in the 2013 Southeastern Conference Media Day on Thursday morning, which was held at the Westin Hotel in downtown Birmingham.
Crimson Tide head coaches Anthony Grant and Kristy Curry, along with player representatives Trevor Releford and Daisha Simmons, met with local and national media throughout the morning session. Topics that were discussed included previewing the 2013-14 Crimson Tide teams, each team's expectations and how practices have been going, among other things.
The men's basketball team returns eight letterwinners and three starters from last season's 23-12 squad that finished tied for second in the Southeastern Conference. Releford, a 2013 All-SEC Preseason First Team honoree, leads the returnees after averaging team-highs of 14.9 points and 2.1 steals per game, while shooting a team-best 40.7 percent from beyond the arc.
Meanwhile, the women's basketball squad is under the direction of first-year head coach Kristy Curry, who took over the program in May. Alabama returns six letterwinners from a season ago, including its top two scorers in Simmons and Shafontaye Myers. There are several new faces on the Tide roster this season as well, with six freshmen and two junior college transfers.
